'Twas a long walk from the parking lot to the orchard. Wagon rides are available but we opt not to take them on the way to pick apples. Blisters formed at the back of my ankles while walking in my heeled boots.
When we arrived at the area where they give out packs to place our fresh picks, I felt uncomfortable. But seeing the excitement on my son's face, I'm willing to endure. Well, it's my fault. Had I chosen the proper footwear for the outing, it wouldn't have happened.
Mountain Orchards is vast. Though nothing to worry about since signposts and maps are available pointing us to where specific varieties of apples are located. They have Lobo, McIntosh, Cortland, and Spartan at the time of our visit. There's also information on what year the trees are planted.
The place is not just an orchard. Lots of activities to do there too. Check it out here.
We didn't pay for parking or entrance rather you only pay for the apples you pick. If you decide not to get a pack, then no need to bring out your wallet. Yes, you can eat what you pluck at the spot free of charge. If you don't mind unwashed apples.
The difference between fresh pick apples and store-bought ones is noticeable. The former is more crispy than the latter. We got the small pack which cost us about $30 CAD.
On the way back to the entrance from the apple orchard, we made sure to take the wagon ride. Ah, I felt relieved from all the walking.
It sure is a fun fall activity for the entire family. And a short drive from Ottawa, Ontario which takes less than an hour.
